🔷 What’s New?
The Government of India has implemented a major reform in the citizenship verification process starting 2025. Aadhaar Card will no longer be accepted as proof of Indian citizenship. Instead, only the Voter ID and Indian Passport are considered valid documents.
✅ Accepted Citizenship Documents
✅ Valid Documents | ❌ Not Accepted |
---|---|
Voter ID (EPIC) | Aadhaar Card |
Indian Passport | PAN Card, Ration Card |
📌 Why Was Aadhaar Dropped?
- Security Concerns: Risk of data breaches and misuse of Aadhaar.
- Data Accuracy: Duplicate or fake entries found in Aadhaar records.
- Simplification: Reduced complexity in documentation.
- Prevent Identity Fraud: Aadhaar used by illegal migrants to falsely claim citizenship.
📊 What About Birth Certificates?
✅ When Valid
- Issued before 1987 in India.
- Used for minors (under 18) with parent’s valid citizenship proof.
- Officially registered with municipal/local authority.
❌ When Not Valid Alone
- Issued by hospitals or schools without registration.
- Post-1987 births need additional proof of at least one Indian parent.
- Unregistered or altered documents are rejected.
🛂 Government Position
As per the Government of India and recent Delhi Police guidelines:
- Only Voter ID and Passport are accepted for definitive citizenship proof.
